“So, stay at your post, watching. You have no idea when the homeowner is returning, whether evening, midnight, cockcrow, or morning. You don’t want him showing up unannounced, with you asleep on the job. I say it to you, and I’m saying it to all: Stay at your post. Keep watch.” – Mark 13:37 (MSG)
I had a dream last night that gave me an outside perspective of who I was growing up. In the dream, my years as a youth were focused around making decisions that were easy and safe. Even in my dating life, I went after the girls that I knew liked me first before I would approach them. I was often afraid of the people that seemed like they had life more figured out than I did.
As a boy, I lived my life in fear of the world around me.
I was afraid.
I was timid.
I was not confident of who I was.
I was not able to carry myself to the next level.
This last year of my life has shown me how I have been living in fear for too long.
Jesus makes two powerful statements in this scripture:
Stay at your post.
In this passage, Jesus is revealing the truth to them that they really don’t know how long their life is going to be. God could show up at anytime and at any moment. Our life is a lot shorter than we think it is. None of us can predict our time here in this earth. With that in mind, do not live a life of fear! Stay at your post. Keep watch.
What is my post? Today, my job is to be positioned as a child of God. My station is to be the man in my house. I am called to love my wife and lead my children into the heart of Christ. I can only do this by standing firm in the life God has called me to. In between the lines of these statements, I hear Jesus whispering strength to my soul:
Stay at your post.
You can do it!
Keep watch. Stay focused. Keep your head up. Fix your eyes straight ahead on Jesus. Throw off anything that easily entangles you and run towards Him with everything you have. I pray that these words would take you one step closer by whispering strength into the very places today that you feel weak.
